Nine Dallas-Area Organizations Making a Difference for Those Living With Mental Illnesses

The Well Community is part of a network of organizations that advocate for mental health and help meet the need for relationship and connection among those who live with mental illnesses. We’re thankful for other Dallas-area organizations like these that serve individuals who are impacted by mental health challenges.

NAMI North Texas

As the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI North Texas provides information, resources and support for individuals who are impacted by mental illness and their families, and advocates on their behalf. Founded in 1982, it offers numerous family and peer education courses and support groups, and organizes seminars and events such as NAMIWalks North Texas that raise awareness of mental illness and fight stigma.

The Grace Alliance

Based in Waco, Texas, The Grace Alliance is a national organization that provides Christian mental health resources, support groups and training for churches, communities, families and individuals. Its Dallas-area Living Grace Peer Support Groups (for those living with mental illness) and Family Grace Groups (for spouses and families) provide community-based small group support, tools and insight.

Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute

Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute was founded by the Meadows Foundation in 2014 with a vision to see Texas be the national leader in treating all people dealing with mental health needs. It works at the state, regional and local levels to help mental health systems improve, share best practices, develop resources and increase public awareness on the most effective ways to treat mental illness and help people pursue stability.

Mental Health America of Greater Dallas

Founded in 1947, Mental Health America of Greater Dallas promotes mental wellness through community education and policy advocacy. It helps develop and improve resources for children, teens and adults, and seeks to serve as a catalyst to identify, assess and respond to mental health needs in the community. It hosts a variety of peer-led support groups, and more than 100,000 people participate in the organization’s educational programs each year.

Grant Halliburton Foundation

Founded in 2006 in memory of a Dallas teen who battled depression and bipolar disorder for several years before his death by suicide at the age of 19, Grant Halliburton Foundation works to help families and young people recognize the signs of mental illness. It offers a variety of education programs and runs Here For Texas, which includes a searchable online database of mental health resources in Texas, as well as the Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line (972-525-8181), a free helpline that helps Texans access mental health and addiction resources and information.

Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas

Located in Dallas, the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas runs a crisis hotline that has been in continuous operation since 1968. This line (214-828-1000) is staffed 24/7 with trained volunteers and takes approximately 1,500 calls each month. In addition to the hotline, the organization offers training programs, debriefing and support groups for those who’ve lost a loved one to suicide.

People Living Active Now (PLAN) of North Texas

People Living Active Now (PLAN) of North Texas provides comprehensive support toward a “meaningful life in community” for individuals with mental illness and their families. An affiliate of Jewish Family Service, it offers clinical services, events and activities that provide a holistic approach to treating individuals struggling with mental health conditions.

Metrocare

As the largest provider of mental health, developmental disability and permanent supported housing services in Dallas County, Metrocare serves over 50,000 children, teens and adults each year. Established in 1967, it offers mental health care, primary care, services for veterans and their loved ones, accessible pharmacies, homeless outreach and supportive social services. Its Altshuler Center for Education & Research is the premier training and research institute for community mental health professionals across Texas.

VA North Texas Health Care System

The VA North Texas Health Care System provides comprehensive health care for veterans in 38 counties in North Texas, as well as two in Oklahoma. With headquarters in Dallas, it offers a wide range of mental health services, including telehealth services, inpatient treatment and outpatient programs.

In addition to these Dallas-area organizations, we’re thankful for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available nationwide. This national network of local crisis centers provides free and confidential support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress or concerned about a loved one. By calling or texting 988, anyone in the United States can reach a trained crisis counselor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
