A Well World: Party Hardy

For most of us, parties are routinely a part of our community life. We gather for birthdays, holidays, Super Bowls and major life events. We celebrate the people and memories we treasure most. We laugh and eat and visit and eat and chat and eat! Such gatherings are an essential part of belonging. They help us connect on silly and also sincere levels. Being included in a party tells us we are welcomed, accepted and enjoyed.

This is all true of parties at the Well Community. We celebrate whenever and whatever we can. These events glue us together and help to reinforce our commitment to one another.

February is a great month for parties. Our Valentine party was, as always, a fantastic event as members enjoyed special treats and worked on heart-themed crafts. Next week we’ll celebrate Mardi Gras and our annual mask-making activity, and we’ll soon celebrate St. Patrick’s Day together. Amid it all is laughter, light-hearted jesting and full-on fun.

Before joining the Well, our members had little reason or opportunity to celebrate. But within this community, despite struggles with severe mental health conditions, our participants can “party hardy” with others who share in the gift of belonging.

It’s my joy to celebrate with them.
