At the Well we emphasize “community” as a central focus of our ministry. We believe that it is in the company of others that we grow, learn and enjoy the things that give life meaning. Here we most often think of community in the context of our members, together with staff and volunteers, fostering the best in each other and serving each other with respect and humility.
However, over the years I have seen another aspect of community at the Well. I’ve noticed that our volunteers most often come in groups. They bring their community with them to join our community. Whether they come as a group from a civic organization like the Young Men’s Service League or as a family group like the Colemans, our volunteers know that serving together multiplies not only the impact of ministry but also the fun of fellowship.
Sometimes a church group or Sunday school class will not only serve a meal at Thursday Night Life but also lead worship music and/or provide the message. Our friends from St. Jude Oak Cliff, Kessler Park United Methodist and Cliff Temple Baptist are some of our frequent volunteers. I hear their laughter in the kitchen as they stir pots of soup or mix salads. I watch them sit at the tables with our members during worship or over the meal, interacting with kindness and acceptance. I see their community blend with the Well community as they focus together on faith and friendship.
In all of this I am reminded that the foundation of community is invitation. We invite others to “come and see.” We tell them of opportunities for service and for fun. I wonder what community group you might invite to join in at the Well?
